Illimar Altosaar

Senior Associate, Biotechnology

Dr. Illimar Altosaar joined Athena Global in 2005 as a senior associate. Illimar is a world-renowned expert on plant biology and genetically modified organisms. He is a Full Professor working with the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunology, and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

Illimar is currently conducting research in cytogenetics and gene organization as well as world food security through a grant awarded by the Rockefeller Foundation. He has extensive experience working both in university research environments and in collaboration with industry leaders such as Monsanto Inc. The complete list of crops, foods and fibers being engineered by the consortium of food and plant biotechnologists led by Illimar is extensive.

He has received numerous research awards, honours and appointments and has had many academic appointments including his current appointment of Head, Pathology and Biotechnology Laboratory, Jõgeva Plant Breeding Institute, Estonia.

Illimar has a Bachelor's of Science from McGill University and holds a Doctorate in Plant Protein Chemistry from the University of British Columbia.
